WEEK 2
For week 2's tutorial, we started to dive into the ideation for what product we want to design for this module and we are also required to do literature reviews for the idea we have chosen.
❔ Why do Literature Review?
A literature review is a survey of literature such as books, articles and other sources that help us to find out more about the concepts, theories and issues relevant to the idea we have chosen. We will examine the sources and information gathered and provide clear summaries and points of view that might help with the research of our idea.
It is important for us to do literature review as firstly, we are able to evaluate and find out how much research is already done for this particular topic that will be beneficial for us to know.
Secondly, we are able to identify key questions that might require more research and also experts and professionals who have done multiple researches on the topic, thus we can dig on the web more about them and possibly finding more relevant and reliable information that we can use.
Lastly, it helps to steer clear of inadvertent plagiarism as by having a complete summary of our literature reviews, we know what we are saying and thus, protecting and preventing ourselves against plagiarism.
🔎 What is a Good Literature Review?
A good literature review will consists of:
1. Reliable sources that are relevant to the topic, written by professionals & credible writer, websites that contain citations.
2. Cross referencing to other sources to increase credibility.
2. Provides a strong background for the research topic.
3. Narrow enough to eliminate irrelevant knowledge.
4. Wide enough to cover enough information and ?s one might have.
5. A balance between supporting and opposing sources.
⛈ Topic the Group Decided on.
The brainstorming process was not as easy and smooth-sailing for the team. We came up with a lot of impossible ideas due to the lack of experience and the restrictions we are tied down with. Below the chosen topic will be all of the rejected ideas ;-;.
Chosen Idea:
✔ Non refrigeration preservation system for food.
We wanted to find a way to preserve food without the need to prepare or reheat them and affecting the taste and quality of them.
Usually, when food gets preserved, quality will be heavily compromised and by using refrigeration systems to preserve them, we are opening up new rooms for contamination and bacteria growth between cooked and raw food in the fridge or freezer. Moreover, food can not be eaten straight when taken out from a refrigeration system without needing to compromise its taste, quality and safety.
Rejected Ideas:
❌ Sustainable batteries that are cost and environmentally friendly.
We wanted to manufacture such a product as we need more efficient yet cheap batteries due to electricity being expensive, batteries running flat too quickly and the revolution of renewable energy.
However, such developments are not within our reach and we should leave such projects to Elon Musk.
❌ Self cooling thermal flask.
We wanted to use something else other than ice to cool down drinks as ice will dilute drinks, thus affecting quality of the drinks. Also, under such a crazy weather with a beaming red hot sun shining at us daily, cold drinks do not stay cold for a long period of time.
However, the team felt that it was not something we want to advance on even though it is a good idea.
❌ Insulating heat phone case.
Since phone batteries drain faster under a hotter weather due to heat gain, we decided to create something to not make the phone battery deplete as quickly.
However, since in this module we are emphasizing on development of chemical products and an insulation case is not one, thus it does not fit the criteria.
